- Here is the link to the online homework site. Remember, online work counts 19% of the course grade (more than a regular test). You will not be permitted to continue attending class if you have not created your online homework account by the official day of record (Jan. 30).
The Course ID for the class is waller30142 The school zip code is 77002. Use an email address that you check regularly.
- Don't get lulled into a false sense of security just because you may be doing really well on the online homework - remember that tests will cover the classroom material too.
- I will begin enforcing the attendance policy on Thurs. Jan. 24. See the course syllabus for details.
- If you are new to UHD, you will need to get your university network account info (username and password) to log on to any computer on campus. You can get this info thru student e-services on the main UHD web page. Go to the front desk in either S-800, C-300, or N-925 if you need help.
- If you purchase a hard copy of the textbook somewhere online (such as at Amazon.com), you probably will not receive the MyMathLab access code with the book. You will then have to purchase that separately at the MyMathLab web page, so you won't be getting a good deal. If you buy a hard copy of the book new in the UHD bookstore, it should come shrink-wrapped with the access code. BE SURE TO GET THE VERSION SHRINK-WRAPPED WITH THE ACCESS CODE.
- Remember to bring a scientific calculator to class each day. A scientific calculator has "log" and "ln" keys.
- Please follow Dr. Waller's Rules of Classroom Etiquette.
1. Go to the restroom before class.
2. Unless you become suddenly ill or notify me before class, remain in class until dismissed by me.
3. Cell phones should be turned off and put away. No electronic earpieces that are not medically necessary.
4. No web surfing. Do not work on the online homework during class.
5. No sleeping - if you get drowsy, ask your neighbor to slap, pinch or kick you.

Scatter Plot and Curve Fitting Applet If the applet doesn't work in your browser, you may need to download and install the Sun Java Runtime Environment.
Here is another site called WolframAlpha we will use to fit functions to data sets and solve systems of equations. You can also use the site to graph functions.
EXAMPLE 1: Suppose you want to fit a linear function to the data table shown here using WolframAlpha.

Then you would enter the command fit (1,7),(1,8),(2,8),(3,9),(5,12),(7,12.5),(9,14)
The correlation coefficient R can be found by computing the square root of the value R^2 shown in the output.
Sometimes you have to be more specific and enter the command linear fit
EXAMPLE 2: To print your output from WolframAlpha, right-click with the mouse on the particular piece of output you want to print (this can include graphs). Then choose Copy from the pop-up menu that appears. Then open a document in any word processing software (like Word) and paste the image into the document. You can then print the document.
EXAMPLE 3: Suppose you want to use WolframAlpha to graph the quadratic function

using the graphing window [-4,8] x [-2,16]. Then you would enter the command plot y=4x-x^2+12 from x=-4 to 8, from y=-2 to 16
EXAMPLE 4: If you want to use WolframAlpha to fit a parabola to a data table, then use the command quadratic fit
EXAMPLE 5: Suppose you want to use WolframAlpha to solve the system of equations

Then you would enter the command solve 4a-2b+c=22, 4a+2b+c=-2, 16a+4b+c=22
