1. Go to the restroom before class.
2. Unless you become suddenly ill or notify me before class, remain in class until dismissed by me.
3. Cell phones should be turned off and put away. No electronic earpieces that are not medically necessary.
4. No web surfing. Do not work on the online homework during class.
5. No sleeping - if you get drowsy, ask your neighbor to slap, pinch or kick you.

Scatter Plot and Curve Fitting Applet   If the applet doesn't work in your browser, you may need to download and install the Sun Java Runtime Environment.

Here is another site called WolframAlpha we will use to fit functions to data sets and solve systems of equations. You can also use the site to graph functions.

EXAMPLE 1: Suppose you want to fit a linear function to the data table shown here using WolframAlpha.

Then you would enter the command fit (1,7),(1,8),(2,8),(3,9),(5,12),(7,12.5),(9,14)

The correlation coefficient R can be found by computing the square root of the value R^2 shown in the output.

Sometimes you have to be more specific and enter the command linear fit

EXAMPLE 2: To print your output from WolframAlpha, right-click with the mouse on the particular piece of output you want to print (this can include graphs). Then choose Copy from the pop-up menu that appears. Then open a document in any word processing software (like Word) and paste the image into the document. You can then print the document.

EXAMPLE 3: Suppose you want to use WolframAlpha to graph the quadratic function

using the graphing window [-4,8] x [-2,16]. Then you would enter the command plot y=4x-x^2+12 from x=-4 to 8, from y=-2 to 16

EXAMPLE 4: If you want to use WolframAlpha to fit a parabola to a data table, then use the command quadratic fit

EXAMPLE 5: Suppose you want to use WolframAlpha to solve the system of equations

Then you would enter the command solve 4a-2b+c=22, 4a+2b+c=-2, 16a+4b+c=22
