Spring 2006
Due by 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2006
1. Topic*
You are to choose a topic as described in part a or part b below.
a. Some historical aspect of groups
You may find it helpful in selecting a topic by first reading the history of "The abstract group concept" at the The MacTutor History of Mathematics archive website: http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/HistTopics/Abstract_groups.html .
b. An application of groups
You may find it helpful in selecting a topic by first reading through the table of contents and index of our book: symmetry groups, dihedral groups, etc.
*You must submit your topic to me for approval before you write your paper.
2. Format
There should be a title page with your name and the title of your paper. You are then to write a paper of length 3 - 5 pages. The paper must be typewritten in double-spacing with 12 point font and 1-inch margins on the left and right. It must be handed in on paper; submissions by email or on floppy disk are not acceptable. You must have at least 2 references, of which at least one is a written reference (book, journal article, etc.). The last page of your paper should list all references with a complete citation for each reference; include the URL for Internet references.
In writing the paper, explain your topic so your class peers could easily understand and become acquainted with the topic. You should utilize the UHD Writing Center (N925) for assistance in style and grammar. The paper must be your own for this course. Copying any portions from someone else's work will result in zero credit.
Please feel free to ask me any questions related to your paper.
